Pre-race setup

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series makes its third trip to PRP on the 2015 season for its season finale. The 35th annual Dirt Track World Championship kicked off Thursday night with modified time trials, heat races and consolations.

The Late Model portion of the event will get under way tonight, greeting competitors with a new format. Instead of time trials, a double-heat race format, similar to that of Florence Speedway’s Sunoco North-South 100, will be used, with passing points determining the first 16 cars locked in to the feature lineup. Heat races will be lined up by random draw and lap counts will vary based on the number of cars plus two laps.

Consolation races will be contested Saturday to set the remainder of the field for the $100,000-to-win 100-lapper. Saturday’s schedule also includes the Jim Dunn Memorial non-qualifiers' race.

Pre-race notes

The induction ceremony will take place at Florence Speedway’s North-South 100 in August. … Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., will clinch the 2015 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series title by starting the 100-lap feature. … Former DTWC winner Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., was the winner of the July 4 Lucas Oil Series stop at PRP; last year’s race winner Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., picked up a tour victory at the racetrack on Sept. 5. … Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., was the winner of 2012 DTWC in its inaugural year at PRP. … Drivers Audie Swartz of Minford, Ohio, and Rod Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, are guaranteed starting spots in Saturday’s feature based on their performances at PRP earlier this season. Swartz is the 2015 track champion, while Conley was the winner of the June 6 Boone Coleman Memorial "Gator 50.” … With Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., unable to compete this weekend because he's in Georgia to attend his former crewman Derek Gehring's wedding, he has fellow World of Outlaws regular Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., behind the wheel of his Longhorn No. 1*.
