What won the race: Shep Lucas of Mckenzie, Ala., celebrated a $2,000 holiday weekend triumph in Saturday night's NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Independence 40 at Penton Raceway. He took advantage of his pole position starting spot to register his first victory of the season on the Crate Late Model tour.
Key notes: Lucas's victory was his fifth overall of the 2016 season. ... Runner-up Cory Hedgecock crossed the finish line a distant 3.690 seconds behind Lucas. ... The Crate series completes a three-race holiday weekend Sunday at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City.
