What won the race: David Payne of Murphy, N.C., led all 35 laps of Tuesday's Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals at Boyd's Speedway for his first series victory. Payne set fast time and started on the pole en route to his $3,500 victory on the tour promoted by his long-time friend and fellow racer Ray Cook. Vic Hill and Craig Vosbergen finished second and third.
Quotable: "This has been a long time coming, a lot of miles up and down the road," Payne said. "To be able to get one of these wins on Ray's series, he does a tremendous job, and the racetracks that have him, and these fans that come out and support it, man, it's amazing."
Key notes: Payne is the head coach of the Murphy High School boys' basketball team. ... The feature was slowed by one caution on lap 18. ... Payne was able to maintain his lead through lapped traffic late in the event to pick up the victory.
