PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Oct. 14) — Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., and three-time and defending race winner Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., will start on the front row of Saturday night’s $100,000-to-win 36th annual 36th annual Rhino Ag Dirt Track World ChampionshipPortsmouth Raceway Park.
McDowell and Bloomquist were the top finishers in combined passing points after two rounds of eight preliminary heat races to set the field for Saturday’s 100-lapper. A total of 16 drivers were locked in to the main event based on their combined heat race finishes.
After leading flag-to-flag to win his first heat, McDowell charged from the rear of the field to pick up another heat race victory in the second round of prelims. He was the only driver to win a heat in both rounds and topped the combined passing points chart as he moved on to his 12th career DTWC feature appearance; his best finish is third, in 2002 at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, Ky.
Following McDowell (130.320) and Bloomquist (128.080) in the passing-points standings were Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla. (128.080), Rick Eckert of York, Pa. (128.080) and Greg Satterlee (123.320).
The first eight rows of Saturday's feature will line up straight up by Friday's combined passing points totals. Saturday's three consolation races — transferring two from each — will set the remainder of the field for the 100-lapper. Series and track provisionals will fill out the final rows of the feature lineup.

With overcast skies and temperatures in the 60s, an 80-car field is signed in for the evening’s qualifying heats. That’s down just one car from 2015, when event promoter Carl Short pushed the winner’s purse to $100,000 for the first time. … The last car to arrive was the No. 12 driven by Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg, Ind. … Ten former DTWC winners are entered: Scott Bloomquist (winner of the last two 100s), Brandon Sheppard, Jimmy Owens, Don O’Neal, Earl Pearson Jr., Chub Frank, Shannon Babb, Rick Eckert, Darrell Lanigan and Steve Francis. … Moweaqua, Ill.’s Babb, a two-time DTWC victor, is making his first-ever start at Portsmouth. He’s still looking for his first feature victory of the season; he’s never gone through a campaign winless since he began driving a Dirt Late Model. … Jacksonville, Fla.’s Pearson is sporting a new white-dominated wrap on his Dunn-Benson Racing machine. … Frank and his teammate Boom Briggs, both of Bear Lake, Pa., are honoring the memory of long-time shock rep Mike Farr, who died Oct. 7 at the age of 65, by racing with the No. 41 — Farr’s number when he competed in the Limited Late Model division on the Stateline/Eriez circuit in the ‘70s and ‘80s — on the doors of their cars. Chub has a No. 41* and Briggs a No. 41b. … Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., is entered in the DTWC competition for the first time in his career, but he’s enjoyed success at Portsmouth in the past, including a $10,000 triumph in a 2007 MACS-sanctioned event. “This place and Pittsburgh (where he ran the Pittsburgher 100 last week) are probably two of my favorite tracks,” Covert said. … Greg Johnson of Bedford, Ind., who started last year’s DTWC feature on the front row after earning the second-most passing points in Friday night’s qualifying program, is driving Kentuckian Jesse Puckett’s Club 29 machine again. … Teenager Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, is making his first-ever DTWC assault. … The youngest driver in the field is 15-year-old Michael Lake of Uniontown, Pa., whose DTWC debut last year ended with mechanical trouble in a B-Main. … Another fresh-faced entrant is 16-year-old Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., who is making his first DTWC attempt alongside his father Don. … Florence Speedway regular Ethan Burgess of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a first-time DTWC entrant, though he has raced at PRP in the past.
The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series makes its third and final stop at Portsmouth (Ohio) Raceway Park for the 2016 season finale. The 36th annual Ag Rhino Dirt Track World Championship kicked off on Thursday night with modified time trials, heat races and consolations.
The Late Model portion of the event gets under way Friday night, using the same double-heat race format introduced last year. Passing points will determine the lineups for Saturday’s consolations and 100-lap, $100,000-to-win main event. Heat races will be lined up by random draw and lap counts will vary based on the number of cars plus two laps.
Consolations will be contested Saturday, setting the remainder of the feature field not locked in through passing points. Saturday’s schedule also includes the Jim Dunn Memorial non-qualifiers’ race.
