Phillip Cobb picked up a Florida Late Model Challenge Series victory at East Bay.
What won the race: Taking the lead following a bevy of restarts for a lap-10 caution, Phillip Cobb of Dover, Fla., held off David Whitener’s charge over the final five laps to win the 25-lap Florida Late Model main event at East Bay. Whitener settled for second, with early leader Steve Mathis Jr. third.
Key notes: Cobb won $1,000 while snapping Nevin Gainey’s two-race series win streak. … It was Cobb’s second career Florida Late Model Challenge Series victory. He last won Sept. 23 at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla., and is now tied with Gainey and Shan Smith atop the second-year tour’s all-time win list. … Cobb was the fourth leader. Forrest Gough led early before giving way to Gainey. Gainey was psssed by Mathis Jr., who eventually turned the lead over to Cobb. … The Florida tour returns to East Bay on July 28.
