TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (July 9) — Hall of Famer Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., went back on top of the back-and-forth battle with Shannon Babb as the all-time winningest UMP DIRTcar Summernationals driver Wednesday with a flag-to-flag victory at Terre Haute Action Track.
The 56-year-old Moyer led all 30 laps at the historic half-mile oval better known for open-wheel racing to earn $5,000 for his 86th career Summernationals victory.
He wasn’t challenged while winning by more than a straightaway on the big track, but he survived a lap-21 scare when he tried to go around the slower car of Bob Mayer entering turn one and wheel-hopped the lapped machine. Moyer kept control while Mayer slid into the turn-one concrete.
Moyer's fourth series victory of 2014 is most among any driver and are the six-time series champion's most in a single series season since capturing six checkered flags in 2010. He won a career-best 12 races in 1999.
Outside front-row starter Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., held the second spot all the way, turning back several challenges from third-finishing Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., who started eighth.
Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., was right behind Babb in fourth while NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Austin Dillon of Welcome, N.C., rounded out the top five.
Series points leader Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., recovering from a concussion suffered after an object struck his helmet during Tuesday’s main event at Florence Speedway in Union, Ky., skipped the night’s prelims and drove conservatively in the main event, finishing ninth as the last driver on the lead lap.
That allowed Babb to unofficially regain the series points lead with eight races remaining
Four cautions slowed the action, the first on the first lap when Brian Shirley slowly spun in turn three on first lap, drawing a complete restart.
The second appeared on the sixth lap when third-running Jason Riggs got high in turn two and when Bobby Pierce tried to get under him down the backstretch, they came together and slid into the inside wall nosepiece-first as they both slid sideways. Riggs drove to the pits while Pierce was towed off the track.
Duke Mounce’s turn-three spin on the 16th lap drew the third yellow and the Moyer-Mayer contact brought out the final caution with 10 laps remaining.
After a night at the tour’s largest track, the series moves to one of the smallest on Thursday for the $5,000-to-win Herald & Review 100 at fifth-mile Macon (Ill.) Speedway.
Preliminary results:
Polesitter Brian Shirley raced to victory in the second 10-lap heat, caution-free just like the first. Teammate Jason Riggs was second while Bobby Pierce and Shannon Babb mixed it up all race long for third with Pierce getting the spot.
Finish (all transfer): Brian Shirley, Jason Riggs, Bobby Pierce, Shannon Babb, Steve Lance Jr. Scratched: Steve Kester, Ryan Unzicker.
Polesitter Billy Moyer cruised to a victory in the first heat while Brandon Sheppard, who lost the second spot early, fought back to regain it from Kent Robinson midway through the race. They finished about a straightaway behind Moyer while Austin Dillon gained ground in his fourth position in the final laps. Jim Moon was fifth.
Finish (all transfer): Billy Moyer, Brandon Sheppard, Kent Robinson, Austin Dillon, Jim Moon, Chris Fetter, Bob Mayer, Duke Mounce.
Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., the only three-time winner on the series, topped 15 entrants in time trials Wednesday at Terre Haute with a lap of 20.623 seconds on the half-mile fairgrounds oval. He’ll start on the pole of the first eight-lap heat race while Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., will start on the pole of the second heat. All cars will transfer to the 30-lap main event.
The 19th race of the Summernationals takes the tour to the largest track at historic Terre Haute, a half-mile oval that has hosted some of the biggest names in open-wheel racing.
The Summernationals will be the only Late Model event at the track in 2014 as the series makes its fifth visit to the track in series history.
There’ll be a new Terre Haute winner for the series because the two previous drivers to win — Don O’Neal (2000, ’03, ’12) and Scott Bloomquist (’02) — aren’t among the 15 entries, which is the lowest car count of the season and likely the lowest in the history of the tour that began in the late 1980s.
The 15-car field will be split into two groups for qualifying and heat races with everyone transferring to the 30-lap feature.
The event is part of the Vigo County Fair. … Summernationals points leader Ryan Unzicker, who spent the night in a Florence, Ky., hospital after an object struck in helmet late in Tuesday’s feature at Florence Speedway, may take a single lap in the feature to pick up his minimum starting points.
