David Payne heads for a $4,400 victory at Tazewell Speedway.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead with four laps remaining when race-long leader Casey Roberts cut down a tire, David Payne of Murphy, N.C., captured Sunday's Buddy Rogers Memorial at Tazewell. Payne beat polesitter Vic Hill by 1.497 seconds for his second career Southern Nationals Bonus Series victory, earning $4,400 in the 44-lap main event.
Quotable: “We decided to do something (graphically) like what my dad used to run,” Payne said of his throwback decal scheme. "We got with Chris Medley who does the graphics on this car. We gave him some pictures and he got it almost exactly to how my dad’s car used to look. We even put some of my dad’s old sponsors on there to pay tribute to them, even though a couple of them have passed away. I’m really proud of it."
Key notes: Payne won the Buddy Rogers Memorial for the second time. ... Casey Roberts lead laps 1-40 but when Chicky Barton broke a J-bar and hit the turn-two wall, Roberts got a piece of Barton's car and cut a right-rear tire. ...
