What won the race: Inheriting the lead early in Saturday’s 100-lap main event when leader Billy Drake broke, polesitter Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., led the rest of the way to win the 65th annual Illinois State Championship at Peoria Speedway. Unzicker finished ahead of Jason Feger in earning $5,000.
Key notes: The victory was Unzicker’s second career Illinois State Championship following his 2017 triumph. … With his hauler’s lift gate still not repaired, Unzicker broke out his open trailer to tow to Peoria. He used an additional small enclosed trailer to transport his tools and equipment. … Runner-up Jason Feger’s night was hampered by a broken left rear shock from contact early in the race. ... Third-starting Myles Moos, the overall fast qualifier, saw his night end when a bent fan blade got into his car’s radiator. He finished 15th. … Illinois drivers have now won 59 of the 65 Illinois State Championships, dating back to 1952. … The last non-Illinois driver to win the Illinois State Championship race was Brian Birkhofer, of Muscatine, Iowa, in 1996. … The race was originally scheduled for Oct. 5, but rained out.
