Kevin Adams clinches his fists in triumph after winning the Mahder 55.
What won the race: Winning his first carer Late Model feature despite battling faltering brakes over the final 39 laps, second-starting Kevin Adams of Cameron, Wis., muscled his way to a flag-to-flag victory in the Mahder 55 at Rice Lake Speedway on Saturday night. The modified standout outran A.J. Diemel to earn $5,555 at his home track.
Quotable: “It was basically all rear (brakes) and I was just pumping, pumping, pumping trying to keep anything left in it. The yellows kinda fell right when I need ‘em to and with that berm (the track is) pretty forgiving,” said Adams. “It’s crazy. This is surreal, especially to (win the first Late Model race) at home. I like a tacky racetrack, so the rain gods were with me tonight. I drank a lot of beer with Duane Mahder back in the day at the bar at Jim Falls. I have good stories about him as well and then I love racing with Corey, he’s an awesome nephew of his. It means a lot man, to win at home, I didn’t care if it paid $300 for 5 grand.”
Key notes: The 40-year-old Adams is a modified ace who entered the season with 523 total wins across multiple divisions, including 279 in open wheels. He’s Rice Lake Speedway’s all-time feature winner with 127 career wins and has 16 track championships at Rice Lake (in four divisions). … The victory snapped Jimmy Mars’ stranglehold on the Mahder 55. Mars, the only winner in three previous events, finished fourth. … It was the fourth annual Mahder 55, but the first time it has been held at Rice Lake. … The race honoring the late Duane Mahder of Eau Claire, Wis., a long-time WISSOTA Late Model racer and regular with the WISSOTA Challenge Series who was killed in 2016 in a work-related accident, was moved from Red Cedar Speedway to Rice Lake this year following the closing of Red Cedar for the season. … Fourteen of the 23 starters finished the race. … Todd Frank of Montrose, Iowa, did not start the feature.
On the move: Darrell Nelson of Hermantown, Wis., started 13th and finished third.
