What won the race: Holding off Dave Mass’ high-side charge on the final lap, sixth-starting Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis., raced to the $10,000 Speedway Motors WISSOTA 100 victory on Saturday evening at I-94 Sure Step Speedway. He finished ahead of Mass and his son Sam in winning the event for the second time and first since 1996.
Quotable: “Them lapped cars, they were just fast enough where they’d race you and get me goofed up, and I didn’t want to get in a melee there,” Mars said. “So the cautions would’ve played in my favor for sure. The car was real good.”
Key notes: Mars disposed of third-starting Cole Searing on the sixth lap and held off Mass amid traffic. ... Polesitter Don Shaw of Ham Lake, Minn., retired on lap 23. ... Seventeen cars completed 50 laps and 20 of 33 starters were running at the finish. ... The race started with cars three abreast. ... WISSOTA's biggest event returned after 2020's race was cancelled by Covid-19 restrictions.
On the move: Jordan Tollakson of Montevideo, Minn., started 15th and finished fifth.
