What won the race: Polesitter Jacob Hawkins of Fairmont, W.Va., notched a $7,500 victory Monday at Beckley Motor Speedway's season opener, giving the West Virginian back-to-back Memorial Day weekend wins in his home state. Hawkins, who won Sunday at Tyler County Speedway, beat Tyler Bare of Rockbridge Baths, Va., by 1.710 seconds.
Key notes: Zack Dohm, a prolific special-event winner at Beckley, finished third, two spots better than his father and car owner Tim. ... Jared Hawkins, the winner's brother, placed 20th. ... Chris Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., who led the first half of the race, crossed the line sixth but was disqualified and placed last in the finishing order. The penalty came because, after the race, he retaliated against a competitor who forced him into the infield during the feature while he was running second to the winner. … Carpenter also finished the race with a flat right-rear tire.
On the move: Tyler Cox of Mount Hope, W.Va., started 22nd and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Hawkins drives a C.J. Johnson Motorsports Rocket Chassis powered by a Durham Racing Engine and sponsored by J&J Farms, Middletown Homes, Cash Cabins, Bobby Lake Motorsports, MRRI, Melvin’s Transmission, OFK and Reed’s Grooving Services.
