Mark Whitener celebrates in victory lane at Golden Isles Speedway.
What won the race: Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., led all 60 laps from the pole at Golden Isles Speedway on Saturday, winning the $10,000 Showdown on the Coast feature. Whitener, who also won July's CRUSA stop at the 410-mile oval, earned his second $10,000 payday of the season at Golden Isles.
Quotable: “I really didn’t know if my car was good, because I was out front by myself for much of the race,” Whitener said. “It seemed pretty decent, but you don’t really know unless you’re challenged, or someone shows up on your bumper. When Hunter was trying to drive past me in the latter part of the race and got near me a little bit, I felt that as long as I could stay consistent, he wouldn’t be able to drive around me on the outside. I also knew that if he got up beside me, I was going to have to move a lapped car. I had already made that decision.”
Key notes: Hunter Peacock of Macon, Ga., advanced three positions to finish second, 1.219 seconds back. ... Joseph Brown and CRUSA national points leader Jason Welshan ran inside the top five all race in finishing third and fourth. ... Defending CRUSA national champion, Jimmy Thomas gained four spots and finished fifth. ... Saturday's Showdown on the Coast feature, the season finale at Golden Isles and 16th of 19 scheduled CRUSA races this year, was slowed by four cautions and lasted 56 minutes, with 19 competitors completing 60 laps. ... Scott Waters won the night's 602 Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Michael Lloyd of Jacksonville, Fla., started 17th and finished eighth.
