Ashton Winger (12) fends off a late challenge from Shane Clanton (25).
What won the race: Repelling a late-race challenge from Shane Clanton, pole-starting Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., earned a flag-to-flag victory in Friday's second 30-lap Coors Light Fall Classic semifeature at Whynot Motorsports Park. Winger held on for the $3,000 payday in crossing the line 0.517 of a second ahead of Clanton for his first win of any kind since July 13, a $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals triumph at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio.
Quotable: “It’s just hard to lead when it’s so slick like that and then there’s patches of moisture where you can go out there and get runs,” Winger said. “I probably wasn’t as good as I needed to be. Clean air probably helped me out a lot, and then just being the first one to lapped cars probably helped a little bit. (We’ll) try to get a little better. It could be worse ... we could’ve run 15th.”
Key notes: Shane Clanton grabbed second on lap five and pressured Winger for the final 25 laps as they raced through lapped traffic. ... Josh Putnam started and finished third. ... Mike Marlar rebounded to fifth after heat race contact with Cody Overton broke his left-front suspension; Overton took fourth. ... Second-starting Drake Troutman slipped to ninth, earning the final transfer spot into Saturday's 60-lap, $20,000-to-win feature. ... Cade Dillard advanced seven spots and rounded out the top 10, marking the first driver who will need to qualify through a consolation. ... The second semifeature was completed without incident and lasted just eight minutes, with 15 starters completing 30 laps. ... Brent Larson (lap 27), Cameron Weaver (lap 21) and Ross Camponovo (lap six) were the race's only retirees. ... Tyler Dietz scratched after slamming the turn-three wall in his heat race.
On the move: Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., started 13th and finished fifth.
