Billy Ogle Jr. and happy supporters enjoy victory lane at Tazewell.
What won the race: Inheriting the lead on lap 10 when teammate Stacy Boles of Clinton, Tenn., retired with mechanical issues, Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., led the remaining distance for a $6,000 Old Man's Garage Spring Nationals victory at Tazewell Speedway. The veteran racer beat Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., to the finish line by several car lengths.
Quotable: "I don’t get to run here anymore like I did in the ‘90s, but it’s still a great racetrack and I love it when the Supers come here," said Ogle, whose last visit to Tazewell, on April 11, resulted in his first-ever World of Outlaws Late Model Series event. "It’s intimidating and it still intimidates me. You gotta get through the hot laps and qualifying because you gotta really push the car hard … it’s just so fast, you have to pretty much take it as hard as the car will go. It’s pretty easy to be a little apprehensive here when it’s really fast like that ... it’s a little spooky. But once in blows off, it’s a fun racetrack."
Key notes: Ogle became the fifth different driver to capture multiple career Spring Nationals victories. His other series victory came last season at Smoky Mountain Speedway. … After finally wrestling second place from Vic Hill on lap 33, Chris Madden kept Ogle in sight but wasn't able to offer a serious challenge. He was hampered by a worn right-rear tire and a late-race loss of brakes. ... A single caution flag flew on the eleventh lap. … Donald McIntosh, who entered the event second in the Spring Nationals points standings, went to a backup car after suffering engine problems. He finished 15th in the unlettered Blount Motorsports mount.
Winner's sponsors: Ogle's Stacy Boles-owned Rocket Chassis has a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsorship from Advanced Transporation, Keyser Mfg., Westhaven Speed Equipment, Outlaw Graphics, Competition Racing Equipment, BruceBilt Performance and Hoosier Tire South.
Points chase: Madden maintained his points lead, while Ogle moved past McIntosh to second in the standings.
